London Team #2 St. Paul’s and the City

23 August 2010 by admin, No Comments

It’s been a few days since we last blogged, so we thought it would be a good idea to fill you all in on what has been going on the past the few days with our group.

England, unlike America, has a National church. Many church bishops have differing views, which causes for much diversity in the Anglican Church of England. We went to three different services, each one being very unique from the rest.

It started with St. Paul’s noon eucharist service that we went to Wednesday, August 18th , which was a very traditional, very orthodox. It felt similar to a Catholic Mass service.

On Sunday, August 22nd, we went to two different Anglican churches. One of them was called St. Mary’s Church. This was a semi-charismatic non-traditional Anglican Church.

The same day, we went to All Soul’s Church (where John Stott used to preach). All Soul’s service was more in the traditional Anglican manner. Their preacher (Hugh Palmer) taught on how the Bible alone is authoritative as supreme truth in the Christian’s life. This, he said, is what the Anglican Church is built on. Even though there are some Anglican Pastors who have forgotten many of their articles of faith, the articles themselves have not changed.

It was interesting seeing the differences that exist within a single denomination. It showed us that we can be praying that the Anglican Church would be unified under the headship of Jesus Christ.

On Friday, August 20th, we went to the financial district of London, known as the City. We met with our friend Hanna, who was born and raised in the London area, but lived in LA for a while and was a part of the Reality LA family. Her father works in the financial industry. She told us that there are over 100,000 people who work in the City, which is roughly 1/15th of London’s population. Some people will work till 3 AM, while having to get up for work the next morning at 6 AM.

Business, money, and social status according to these are huge idols in London for many people. Pray that people would become Christians in this industry and realize that their identities are in Christ and not their position. Pray that the Christians who work here would stand firm in their identities in Christ.

We will post more detailed updates soon as we have been out all day each day. We have been praying for everything from the Church of England in front of St. Paul’s, to the British Government in front of Westminster Abbey and for those involved in the sex industry in SoHo. Here are a few snapshots of those moments…

London Prayer Tour Team #2 day 2: Regents Park

20 August 2010 by admin, No Comments

On Wednesday we visited Regent’s Park, which was a distinct break from the concrete jungle of the city. Once inside the park, we headed to the London Central Mosque, where we were handed brochures about the Islamic religion. As we sat outside of the mosque and read these brochures, we took notice of the tendency of false religions to try to be attractive to myriad demographics by mentioning animal rights, water conservation, and even a mention of Jesus as a prophet of Allah.

The current political tension in parts of Europe over the legality of Muslim women wearing burkas in public has exposed to a greater degree the oppression and violence towards women in certain parts of the world (see Time Magazine). Our hearts were broken for the women and children that suffer under the tyranny of many fundamentalists. Many of them are not allowed an education, access to information, and hence have little to no knowledge of the gospel and freedom of Jesus.

Please pray for conviction of truth for the followers of Islam. Pray that an influential leader within the Muslim community be saved so that the gospel can infiltrate that religious pocket which is so quickly growing in London.

We spent some time as a Team praying on top of Primrose Hill overlooking London for all of these things and invite you to pray with us!

Prayer Tour Team #2 day 1!

Tuesday, Aug. 17

Hello people! We are team B.C. (self appointed team name). What it stands for will remain hidden due to ongoing covert operations throughout the city of London. We are very excited to be in this beautiful city and are expectant that Jesus has great things for it!
From right to left: Andrea, Abby, Cailey, Ashley, Jon, Matt, and Tim.

In the morning meeting, Vicar Andrew of St. James Church gave insight on the British mind towards Christianity. The British mind, in some cases, can be resistant to new ideas due to their staunch hold on tradition and this fact inhibits forward progression and stunts growth in the church. Andrew spoke of his admiration for the American “can do” attitude and how we are more willing to jump on trying new things. Pray that they will be more open to new ideas.

Please pray for Andrew’s mentorship of Mark and that God will bless their relationship.

On the first Day of our Prayer Tour we visited Islington, an up and coming district made up of young people and young families. Please pray for these young families who may be considering looking for churches to raise their children in. Pray that these families find Jesus and learn to raise their children in gospel-centered homes. Pray for the churches in this district, specifically St. Mary’s Church, to be faithful in preaching the gospel.

- Psalm 16:5, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.”

After Islington, we went to the district of Shoreditch, which was originally called “Soer-dyge.” Shoreditch is a prime example of how gentrification is taking root in parts of London. This area is comprised of a younger generation where there is a huge focus on the arts and independence. Pray for the Christians there to unite under the gospel and to live out the mission of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pray that the gospel would saturate this area and affect many lives.

- 1 Peter 2:13, “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution.”

Trials: God’s Approval

30 July 2009 by Tim Chaddick, 6 Comments

If your understanding of a relationship with God is “Good things happen when God is happy with me, bad things happen when He is displeased with me” then not only you will be shocked by what the Bible says about trials, but it may indicate that you have a misunderstanding of the gospel. Jesus said that trials, troubles, and tribulations (from a variety sources!) would increase for those who put their trust in Him and that far from being a proof of God’s disapproval they serve as evidence that you truly belong to Him. The gospel tells us that all of God’s disapproval and displeasure against us was placed upon His own Son at the cross of calvary so that we would now only receive the trials of grace that He allows to awaken us, test us, mature us, chasten us and shape us. (James 1:1-12, 1 Peter 4:12-13, Heb. 12:1-11)
I came across an old out-of-print book by J. Oswald Sanders entitled “Men from God’s School” and in it I found a quote that presents this truth wonderfully:
“Severe testing is not the mark of divine disapproval, rather the reverse. Only Ore which bears precious metal is subject to processing and crushing. Only alloy in which there is valuable metal is placed within the refiner’s fire. Since God has pledged Himself never to subject His children to tests beyond their ability to bear, a severe test is in reality His vote of confidence” Men from God’s School pg. 20
